Millenium da Pippo

On last Sunday we had lunch with friends in a Sicilian restaurant in Budapest, called Millenium da Pippo. The food was delicious, the service was great, so it is recommended to visit the place if you are in Budapest.

 

This is a montage of a 47 years old ham slicer and an old traditional Sicilian cookbook in the restaurant.

Parliament

This is a photo of the Hungarian Parliament on the bank of Danube. Országház (Hungarian Parliament Building) is the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary, one of Europe's oldest legislative buildings, a notable landmark of Hungary and a popular tourist destination of Budapest. It lies in Lajos Kossuth Square, on the bank of the Danube, in Budapest. It is currently the largest building in Hungary and the largest Parliament in Europe.

Budapest was united from three cities in 1873 and seven years later the National Assembly resolved to establish a new, representative Parliament Building, expressing the sovereignty of the nation. A competition was published, which was won by Imre Steindl, but the plans of the other two competitors were also realized, facing the Parliament: one serves today as the Ethnographical Museum, the other as the Ministry of Agriculture.

Construction from the winning plan was started in 1885 and the building was inaugurated on the 1000th anniversary of the country in 1896, and completed in 1904. (The architect of the building went blind before its completion.) There were about one thousand people working on its construction in which 40 million bricks, half a million precious stones and 40 kilograms (88 lb) of gold were used.

Chain Bridge & Saint Stephen's Basilica

This photo was taken from Budai Vár (Buda Castle). You can see the floodlit Lánchíd (Chain Bridge) and the Szent István Bazilika (Saint Stephen's Basilica). 

The Chain Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the River Danube between Buda and Pest, the western and eastern sides of Budapest. It was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Budapest, and was opened in 1849.

Saint Stephen's Basilica is a Roman Catholic basilica in Budapest. It is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose mummified fist is housed in the reliquary.

Kata flower shop

This is the window of my favourite flower shop in Budapest. The owner, called Kata, is so talented designing her shop considering the season or holiday.

Heroes Square

Hősök tere, meaning Heroes Square in Hungarian, is one of the major square of Budapest, Hungary, rich with historic and political connotations. It lies at the end of Andrássy Avenue (with which it comprises part of an extensive World Heritage site), next to City Park. 

The central site of the hero's square, as well as a landmark of Budapest, is the Millennium Memorial (also known as Millennium Monument or Millenary Monument) with statues of the leaders of the seven tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th century and other outstanding figures of Hungarian history (see below). The construction of the memorial was started when the one thousandth anniversary was celebrated (in 1896), but it was finished only in 1900 and the square got its name then.

Old building

Small details of a nice old building in the Buda side of Budapest. This photo reminds me that it's worth looking up to the buildings while walking in the streets of Budapest or wherever you are.

Western Railway Station in Budapest

This is the Nyugati Palyaudvar, Western Railway Station in Budapest. It is the most important and perhaps most beautiful example of cast-iron architecture in the Hungarian capital. The first trains in Hungary departed from the site of the West Railway Station as early as 1846. It is a terminus comprising two brick side-buildings with brick curtain walls and a glass-roofed hall above the railway tracks at the centre. The platform hall is supported by filigree cast-iron supports, like the ones developed for the Crystal Palace in London. The designs for what at the time was a highly modern construction were produced by the Eiffel firm in Paris. It is well worth taking a look into the interior of the platform hall: everything appears to be as in the old days.

Honey

Organic honey at the biggest organic farmers market in Budapest. The market is open on Saturday mornings between 6:30 am and 1:00 pm. 

Address of the market: 1124 Budapest (11th district), Jagelló road 1-3. It's worth to visit.

The beauty of colourful flowers

 

These beautiful flowers caught my eyes right in the street. I knew I had to take a photo of them.

Lunch

 

 Love the colours of the olive oil and the basil. It was taken in a restaurant, called Vapiano.

Here is the pizza counter. You can find out that my lunch was a mouthwatering pizza: tomato sauce, mozzarella, aragula and parmesan.

This is my first photo on this blog. It was taken from our window in Budapest.

I decided to take a photo everyday just to show you that the beauty of life is all around us. Walking in the streets, looking out from a window, shopping in a market, reading a good book, drinking a nice cup of cappuccino... and there it is, you can't take your eyes off of it / her / him. Small joyful moments of our life.
